View on the Oise - Charles-François Daubigny, 1873.
------------------------------------------------
The scene is probably in the neighbourhood of Daubigny's home in Auvers in France. The lack of foreshore suggests that the view was painted from 'Le Botin', a ferry which Daubigny converted into a floating studio. This painting shows the broad handling of paint which was characteristic of his later work.

One of the great advertisers of the late 19th century, James Pyle and his "Pearline Washing Compound" created scores of chromolitho print ads, bills, and trade cards hawking the miracle soap. Pyle even went so far as to label competitor's products as "imitations" and "dangerous." This particular 1896 incentive, included in the packaging, presented twin moons surrounded by stars, teased with, 'directions on back... to find the Maid in the Moon." Note how the stars cryptically spell out "PEARLINE." Early subliminal advertising!

Gaston La Touche
The Anatomy of Love, undated
Oil on canvas
131.4 cm x 148 cm
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
Gaston La Touche (24 October 1854 - 12 July 1913) was a French painter, illustrator, engraver and sculptor. Gaston La Touche was advised first by Manet and then by his friend Félix Bracquemond. He died having just reached an exceptional position in the art world. His landscapes, which were painted with great panache, also had the grace of the 18th century and the taste of the Modern Style. In 1917 an edition of Henri Régnier's Poèmes was published with illustrations from La Touche's compositions. In 1890 the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, a breakaway group from the official Salon, was inaugurated at the Palais de l'Industrie under the aegis of Messonier and Puvis de Chavannes. At that time La Touche was one of the most prominent artists of the classical tradition in this breakaway group. A member of the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts after 1890 and a member of the Société des Artistes Français from 1883, La Touche won a third-place medal in 1884 and a second-place medal in 1888. He won a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1889 and a gold medal at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. He was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1900 and Officier in 1909.

Gustave Loiseau - By the Eure River, Fog Effect (c. 1906) - Private Collection
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Painted by the French Post-Impressionist artist Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935).
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Loiseau spent a brief period at the École des Beaux-Arts, but his true masters were clearly the Impressionist painters. From 1889, Loiseau went several times to Pont-Aven where, like his friend Maxime Maufra, he had met Gauguin. The latter had then given him one of his own still-lifes, Flowers, Blue Iris, Orange and Lemon, in memory of their meeting. However, did not show in his paintings a great interest in synthetism; rather, his works revealed him to be much closer to traditional Impressionism. Gustave Loiseau painted the places represented also by Monet, Pissarro and Sisley. He enjoyed depicting the landscapes of the Île-de-France like Pontoise, or the banks of the Seine and the Oise, the Norman cliffs, as well as views of Paris. The Durand-Ruel Gallery supported Gustave Loiseau from 1897 and, just like Maufra, he belonged entirely to the second generation of the Impressionist painters. In fact, Loiseau showed a indisputable talent in his description of light effects full of delicacy, and had a predilection for misty, frosty or snowy atmospheres, and those subtle interpretations set him apart from his post-impressionist and fauvist contemporaries, who were fascinated by the contrast of pure and strong colours." This rather unusual half finished oil study left the Gallery last year. Previously unattributed we nailed it down to the maestro Sir Thomas Lawrence PRA FRS (1769-1839), which might seem obvious yet had escaped his biographers' attention through the ages. Renowned for his oil studies and unfinished works this was more a half begun portrait and a fascinating insight into his working practice. While the shoulder and neck are sketched in he obviously began with the sitter's eye, embellished by a few strokes for the hair. Unsure whether it had been cut down it was still a wonderful thing and it was a commanding eye in the Gallery.
The sitter was James Hare MP, a well known 18th century conversationalist and wag, intimate of the Devonshire House set and good friends with Charles James Fox, Sheridan et al.

Jakub Schikaneder
Immersed in Thought, c. 1890
Pastel on cardboard
Dimensions unknown
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
Jakub Schikaneder (February 27, 1855 – November 15, 1924) was a painter from Bohemia. Schikaneder is known for his soft paintings of the outdoors, often lonely in mood. His paintings often feature poor and outcast figures. Other motifs favoured by Schikaneder were autumn and winter, corners and alleyways in the city of Prague and the banks of the Vltava – often in the early evening light, or cloaked in mist. His first well-known work was the monumental painting Repentance of the Lollards (2.5m × 4m, lost). The National Gallery in Prague held an exhibition of his paintings from May 1998 until January 1999.

Death and the Maiden .
.
“For all her beauty, Psyche is lonely, unwanted, and unwed. Her father, the king, is distraught and, in his grief, prays to the deities and asks them to send a suitable husband for his daughter. The sacred oracle answers his prayers and instructs the king to prepare Psyche for her marriage. She is to dress in wedding finery and go to a high mountain crag. She then is to plunge herself into the abyss to meet her husband— death. The death marriage is archetypal and is not unique to Psyche’s situation. Every young woman or maiden dies in marriage...” .
.
.
A popular motif found in Renaissance art, Death & the Maiden finds its roots in the Greek myth of Persephone and Hades. Symbolically, Death represents mortality and decay. the Maiden, life and fertility. As equals and opposites, their dance is a delicate one.
