FUMÉE D'AMBRE GRIS (SMOKE OF AMBERGRIS) ~ 1880 BY JOHN SINGER SARGENT
AMERICAN, 1856–1925 (oil on canvas)
Smoke of Ambergris was the product of John Singer Sargent’s trip to North Africa in the winter of 1879–80. One of two paintings that he sent to the Paris Salon of 1880, it is his own interpretation of orientalism, a common theme at that time in which artists sought out exotic subjects. The painting depicts a heavily draped woman inhaling the smoke of ambergris—a resinous substance found in tropical seawater and believed to come from whales. It was thought in the Near East to be an aphrodisiac, as well as a safeguard from evil spirits. The model, of whom Sargent made several sketches, probably lived in cosmopolitan Tangier. In a society that forced women to be intensely private, working as a model would have relegated her to its outer fringes. Her robes and mantle are of a type worn by both men and women throughout North Africa, but the details of the costume and setting come from different regions and social classes. The painting is a mélange of Moroccan objects and customs that Sargent encountered in Tangier and Tétouan. Therefore, the scene must be viewed as an imaginary one. . .
John Singer Sargent (/ˈsɑːrdʒənt/; January 12, 1856 – April 14, 1925) was an American artist, considered the "leading portrait painter of his generation" for his evocations of Edwardian era luxury. During his career, he created roughly 900 oil paintings and more than 2,000 watercolors, as well as countless sketches and charcoal drawings. His oeuvre documents worldwide travel, from Venice to the Tyrol, Corfu, the Middle East, Montana, Maine, and Florida. . .

Harry Siddons Mowbray
Muse of Electricity
1893
Oil on canvas
39 1/2 x 78 3/4 in. (100.3 x 200 cm)

From "The Huntington murals at the Yale University Art Gallery" by Sally Webster, November 13, 2012, The Magazine ANTIQUES:
"Mowbray created lunettes inserted in the entablature above the second-floor balcony, which was supported by marble columns with Corinthian capitals and surmounted by a richly embellished coved ceiling. Each lunette contained a vividly rendered image of one of the Muses, repeating the theme developed by Bitter in the hallway. Of all the recently restored Huntington murals, these lunettes, with their commanding female figures and fresh bright colors, come as a revelation. In addition, their complex iconography reveals the artist’s inventiveness. Only six of the Muses can be fully identified through their symbols; the other three seem to be of Mowbray’s devising. For instance, while Erato, or Lyric and Love Poetry, holds her traditional lyre, Science and Electricity holds a light bulb with a long cord powered by electricity generated from an electrolyte solution in a glass jar-a device known as a Leyden (or Leiden) jar invented in the eighteenth century." NOTE: The murals were located in The Huntington House, Fifth Avenue and Fifty-Seventh Street in NY. The house belonged to Californian railroad magnate Collis P. Huntington and his wife Arabella Huntington (Duval/Yarrington/Worsham). Mrs Huntington was famed for her keen aesthetic and design sense, and commission a number of works for the house. Her son, Archer M. Huntington, torn the house down in 1926. The Mowbray Muses where one of a number of works saved from the wrecking ball and given to Yale.

Monet painted two lilac pictures as a light study. One painting is done when the sun is shining, Lilacs in the Sun and the other painting is done when the sky is overcast, Lilacs, Grey Weather. While the lilac bush is the main character in the two paintings, the only difference other than the light is the number of people in shadow. Google Monet Lilacs or go to giverny-france.com

When a giraffe blocks your view: #TrevorGould, ‘Model of a Nubian giraffe after Jacques Laurent Lagasse,’ 1987-98 and #GeorgeVicatCole (no relation to the more famous Thomas Cole), ‘The Harvest,’ 1876. Nineteenth century meets contemporary. The landscape in juxtaposition with the giraffe is intended to provoke a dialogue about colonization and displacement. Will definitely have to return to @mnbaq not only for the Berthe Morisot retrospective but their historical collection which is undergoing a reinstallation. The landscape is the only 19thC European artwork on display at the moment. 🖼#19thcentury #19thcenturyart #contemporaryart #oilpainting #fineart #nature #landscape #agriculture #farming #landscapepainting #harvest #summer #sculpture #giraffe #africa #wildlife #dexcontextualize #incongruity #unlikelypairing #oldmeetsnew #latergram

Attributed to Joshua Cristall - River Landscape and Mountains

Wales, not only its mountain scenery but its country people also, was one of the most important sources of Cristall’s works and at least a seventh of his exhibits had Welsh subjects of one type or another. In 1802 he is reported to have joined John and Cornelius Varley at Dolgelly, where William Havell also arrived.

In 1803 he travelled and worked with Cornelius Varley, their journey seems to have proceeded from London through Gloucestershire and Herefordshire and thence on a north-westerly course, into Caernarvonshire, where, in the region of Snowdon, so many of their drawings, mainly landscapes, were made. His later Welsh drawings seem to have concentrated upon figures.

It is not clear if this landscape is a scene in Wales but it dates from the time of Cristall’s early visits to the country. He also painted landscapes in various other places including the Lake District, Berkshire and Scotland.

Painted Paris
Painting by Vincent Van Gogh; view of Paris. May 1886. Collection Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam.
Van Gogh painted this view of Paris looking south-west from the hill of Montmartre. Visible on the horizon to the left are the towers of Notre Dame, and, at the centre, the dome of the Panthéon. The work is composed in horizontal layers: the contrasts and warm colours of the foreground give way gradually to vaguer forms and cooler colours. The artist applied this age-old painter’s trick in order to achieve a good effect of depth. #vincentvangogh #vangogh #painting #painter #artistofinstagram #instaartist #vista #panorama #paris #cityview #overview #cityscape #1886 #vangoghmuseum #amsterdam #clouds #cloudsoverparis #vision #impression #bigcity #19thcenturyart #arte #icon #color #mood #parisjetaime #frommontmartre #rooftops

View of Arles with Irises in the Foreground - Vincent van Gogh, 1888.
------------------------------------------------
Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo about this painting in 1888: "A meadow full of very yellow buttercups, a ditch with iris plants with green leaves, with purple flowers, the town in the background, some grey willow trees—a strip of blue sky. If they don't mow the meadow I'd like to do this study again, because the subject matter was really beautiful and I had trouble finding the composition. A little town surrounded by countryside entirely covered in yellow and purple flowers. That would really be a Japanese dream, you know."

Maximilian Pirner
Death, 1883-84
Medium unknown
Dimensions unknown
〰️〰️〰️〰️〰️
Maximilian Pirner (February 13, 1853 – April 2, 1924) was a Czech painter. He was a member of the Vienna Secession, and associated with the Mánes Union of Fine Arts. Pirner's usual themes were classical mythology (such as his Medusa (1891) and Hecate (or Hekate) (1901)) and the macabre (such as Sleepwalker (or Girl in Her Nightie Walks on the Window-Ledge) (1878), Daemon Love (1893), and Allegory of Death (1895)). Described by one critic as having achieved "mastery of the sinuous line". Pirner also had his detractors. One contemporary critic, while acknowledging Pirner's talent, considered him an "over-sophisticated mystic."

Terrific 19th Century German Meissen Porcelain Candle Sticks with Baby Cherubs.

Very beautiful pair of antique Meissen candlesticks of baby cherubs holding up a fish with a large reef in its mouth. The detail is incredible with top quality workmanship on the entire piece. The set is very rare and extremely difficult to find. The subject matter of the cherubs holding the fish is unique and highly sought after by collectors. The set would look beautiful displayed on the side of a clock or placed as decoration on the fire place mantel. The pair is guaranteed to be genuine Meissen and not a reproduction of any kind. The age of the set is late 19th Century and is hallmarked underneath the base. The overall condition is great with a few minor chips here and there. Please preview the pictures very carefully. The set measure 10 1/2 inches tall with a base diameter 4 1/4 inches. Please preview all the pictures carefully.

Gorgeous Antique Hand Painted Porcelain Plaque of a Young Blonde Girl.

Wonderful hand painted German porcelain plaque of a beautiful blonde girl resting against a water fountain. The details on the plaque is exquisite and the subject matter is great. The girl is dressed in a gorgeous white and yellow dress with very fine details on her face and hands. The porcelain plaque is all hand-painted and is signed by the artist on the lower left hand corner. The signature is very hard for me to make out but I believe it reads T.Roscholatt but please look at the picture. On the back of plaque are more hallmarks and the title of the portrait which I believe reads “At the Fountain”. The porcelain plaque measure 5 ¼ inches x 7 ½ inches and is in excellent condition. The frame measures 12 inches x 9 ¾ inches and has been restored on one corner with some loss of the gold gilding. Please preview all the pictures carefully.

Here is the Winterhalter that lives at Harewood House. Adalina Patti, muse of Verdi and Offenbach, favourite of Abraham Lincoln, namechecked in The Age of Innocence, great grand aunt of Patti LuPone, and most brilliantly, a woman who knew her worth - demanding to be paid in gold prior to every performance and (allegedly) training her parrot to cry ‘Cash! Cash!’
