*Monday motivation* the start of a new week is the perfect time to get up and get in a good STRETCH and workout (even in the comfort of your own home). As humans we have a natural tendency to sit quite often and for extended periods of time, unaware of the impact sitting has on our bodies (muscles). In a seated position the hip muscles (hip flexors) become overly flexed and a possible cause of lower back pain and pulled muscles is due to tight hip flexors. So since we can’t avoid sitting entirely, let’s get up and get in that stretch&workout your body needs. ••••••••••••••••••••••
Key stretches for hip flexors:
*Lunges
*Single leg downward dog *Scorpion
*Pigeon
Bodyweight exercises that strengthen the hip flexors:
*Floor bridges
*Knee tucks in a supine position

Deep hip flexor stretching? Not in my backbending-focused vinyasa class this morning. Instead, here’s a breakdown of what we did:
✔️Posterior chain work (a heck of a lot of it)
✔️Hip flexor strengthening (whaaaa? But doesn’t that make them tight? Nope!!)
✔️Abdominal core work (your belly has gotta work hard for those backbends)
✔️Finding strength at our end ranges of motion (think all of the positions of your joints for bow pose)

Needless to say, I thought the class was awesome. I think the students agreed. More than one asked me what other classes I teach at the studio because they wanted more.

The roll up is a classic Pilates exercise that challenges your abdominal muscles, hip flexors, hamstrings and spinal flexion. It’s also one of my favourites! In this video I am using a mini stability ball for an extra challenge. 💚

Your abs are used to initially curl off the ground, your hip flexors help lift your torso and allow for the forward fold, and the hamstrings help keep your legs and feet grounded.

This is often an exercise many people find challenging to do (without using momentum). Learning to articulate the spine and engage the core effectively helps improve movement in this exercise. .

It’s one I incorporate into all my Pilates classes and one that I eventually want most of my clients to do successfully (and they feel so great when they do)! ☺️ .

This SL Hip Extension exercise is from another good friend of mine @vdilzer the addition of the stick introduces tension to the apposing hip flexor. This helped “turn on the inhibited muscles” of the anterior hip to gain more hip extension.

Constantly have tight hip flexors that you stretch and stretch without any results? It's often because they are providing a stabilization function, compensating for inadequate diaphragmatic activity. Consider working on proper core stability. Additionally, stretching then properly strengthening your hip flexors will provide a great deal of benefit.
