Lulworth Castle, East Lulworth, Dorset.
King George III visited the castle on several occasions during his trips to take the waters at nearby Weymouth. On one occasion his ship anchored in Lulworth Cove & he was rowed ashore, before taking a carriage for the final part of the journey. Over the years several other Monarchs have also visited the castle, James I came hunting in 1615, Charles II visited in 1665/6 whilst the Court was at Salisbury, staying away from London due to the Great Plague. He came with his brother the Duke of York, the future James II. After his abdication following the July Revolution, King Charles X of France sought refuge in England & he stayed at the castle for three months in 1830. In 1902, Edward VII visited & Queen Elizabeth II came to the castle in 1984. #lulworthcastle #eastlulworth #dorset #castlesofinstagram #royalvisitors #monarchs #jamesi #charlesii #jamesii #georgeiii #charlesx #edwardvii #elizabethii #history #dorsethistory

Today, I was on the radio with @wessexfm, speaking about my research project about the atmospheric Timewalk attraction! After it closed suddenly nearly a decade ago, barely a record was left behind, so I wanted to tell its story through @theartofthemedattractions.

Here are designs for Ms. Paws, the Timewalk host, and the room we met her in. They are by @thirdlegstudio, who pioneered the idea of immersive museum experiences in the 80s. 🐈🕰🖌

Tyneham Village in Dorset was evacuated in 1943 and has been a ghost town ever since. It's very intriguing and quite eerie. Nature has already started to take back some of the ruins but the church and school are still intact. A great place to visit with some really interesting history!! Please scroll through the pictures of the ruins and church!

Milton Abbey, Milton Abbas, Dorset.
Memorial brass to Sir John Tregonwell, who was one of Henry VIII's commissioners during the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Tregonwell had been appointed Master in Chancery by 1536 & he took part in the proceedings against Sir Thomas More, Anne Boleyn & at the trials of the Pilgrimage of Grace rebels. Given his past, it is somewhat surprising that he was favoured by Mary I, he was conferred a Knighthood at her Coronation, as well as the Shrievalty of Somerset & Dorset, he was also appointed to the Privy Council by 1555. On the accession of Elizabeth I in 1558, it appears that he lost his seat on the Council but he was created a Justice of the Peace for Dorset. Sir John's will, dated December 1563, shows evidence that he was actually a Catholic, which probably explains the favour shown by Queen Mary. He died & was buried at Milton Abbey in January 1565. #miltonabbey #miltonabbas #dorset #churchesofinstagram #ecclesiastical #sirjohntregonwell #masterinchancery #dissolutionofthemonasteries #henryVIII #anneboleyn #sirthomasmore #pilgramageofgrace #maryI #elizabethI #privycouncil #sheriffofsomersetanddorset #tudor #tudorhistory #history #dorsethistory @abbeyatmilton

Milton Abbey, Milton Abbas, Dorset.
The 15th Century Reredos (or alter screen) was originally richly coloured but now only the lowest tier shows traces of this paint. The screen was badly damaged during the Commonwealth period (1649-60) & the twenty six carved figures that originally sat on the plinths were destroyed. It was later restored, in plaster by James Wyatt in 1789. #miltonabbey #miltonabbas #dorset #churchesofinstagram #ecclesiastical #reredos #alterscreen #fifteenthcentury #interregnum #thecommonwealth #seventeenthcentury #jameswyatt #eighteenthcentury #history #dorsethistory @abbeyatmilton

Milton Abbey, Milton Abbas, Dorset.
The tomb of Joseph Damer, 1st Earl of Dorchester & his wife Caroline. In 1742 Joseph Damer, who was MP for Weymouth & Melcombe Regis married Lady Caroline Sackville, the daughter of the 1st Duke of Dorset. Damer was raised to the Peerage as Baron Milton of Milton Abbey in 1762. After his wife's death in 1775, Lord Milton commissioned Robert Adam to design a grand funerary monument for his late wife. His grief was considerable, three years after her passing Horace Walpole noted that 'Lord Milton had been reclusive ever since his wife's death' The monument was carved in white marble by Agostino Carlini, the two reclining figures are of Joseph, Lord Milton propped up on his elbow, mourning his beloved wife Caroline. Carlini later exhibited a model of the monument at the Royal Academy in 1784. Lord Milton was further created 1st Earl of Dorchester & Viscount Milton in 1792, he died in 1798. #miltonabbey #miltonabbas #dorset #churchesofinstagram #tomb #funerarymonument #eighteenthcentury #josephdamer #earlofdorchester #ladycarolinesackville #robertadam #agostinocarlini #royalacademy #history #dorsethistory @abbeyatmilton

The glorious Jesse window in the south transept of the Abbey. Commissioned by the Earl of Portarlington at a cost of £400 (approximately £38,000 in today's money) & designed by the great Augustus Pugin. Milton Abbey, Milton Abbas, Dorset.
The West Front of the Abbey with Milton Abbey House to the left. The original church was founded during the 930's by King Athelstan. Legend has it, that whilst camping with his army on St Catherine's Hill overlooking the site of the present Abbey, he had a vision that he would defeat the Danes in battle & when the vision came true he founded a church on the site, in thanks for his great victory. The original structure burnt down in 1309, when the wooden spire was struck by lightning. Rebuilding began in 1332, on a much grander scale & continued throughout the 14th & 15th Centuries. The Abbey was suppressed during the Dissolution of the Monasteries in 1539 & was purchased for £1000 by John Tregonwell, the King's agent responsible for overseeing the surrender of religious houses in the South & West of England. The Abbey remained in possession of the Tregonwell family until 1752, when it was purchased by Joseph Damer, MP for Bramber in Sussex & later 1st Earl of Dorchester. #miltonabbey #miltonabbas #dorset #kingathelstan #athelstan #tenthcentury #fourteenthcentury #fifteenthcentury #ecclesiastical #architecture #churchesofinstagram #dissolutionofthemonasteries #henryviii #tudor #tudorhistory #johntregonwell #josephdamer #history #dorsethistory @abbeyatmilton

I did the weather watch for BBC Radio Solent this morning. This was how the harbour mouth looked just before nine. They interviewed me on the links between Poole and Newfoundland, so I talked about the cod trade and the beautiful church of St Peter’s in Twillingate. This church was built (third incarnation of a church there) in 1845, and was paid for by the Poole merchant John Slade. Although St Peter’s is a wooden church, it was modelled inside on the interior of Poole’s town church. The brass candelabrum and lamp holders inside St Peter’s all came from St James’s. So the weather watch today came from Poole and Newfoundland. #bbcradiosolent #radiosolent #weatherwatch #poole #newfoundland #twillingate #newfoundlandtrade #dorsethistory #oldlinks

Having catered @miltonabbeyweddings a couple of weeks ago - we were thrilled that a day off coincided with the Anglo Saxon/Viking weekend. A great chance to get close up with history. The group were happy to share their knowledge and answer all our questions. A great hands on experience. Chris tried on chainmail and I blew on a Vikings horn #dorsethistory #miltonabbey #thevikingsarecoming #saxonhistory #historicalreenactment #asklotsofquestions #dorsetlife #ancestors

This little Celtic head was found on the slopes of Maiden Castle in 1985 by Mark Vine an author, Dorset historian and metal detectorist. It was crafted by a member of the Durotriges tribe; possibly the head of a local Celtic deity carved for a little statuette or a handle for a knife. Mark explained to me that the professor at the Ashmolean who processed it, dubbed it the Maiden Castle Head and said that it was the finest example of one that he had ever seen. The professor explained that it was a transitional piece between the earlier Animalistic style of Celtic art and the later classical Roman influenced art. How awesome is he? To think that perhaps one of my ancestors carved this 😍.
