A baby mountain gorilla in Virunga National Park, DRC. I’m happy to have witnessed that this family of the endangered species is healthy and doing good ☺️ even with all the conflicts and fighting with poachers and militia, who stroke again earlier this week in the northern part of the park 😔 Due to the security incidents of then past weeks the park has taken the decision to halt tourism until June 4th. I’m sad to hear this since tourism is so important for the protection and development of the animals and plants living in the park and the local communities related to the park. An immense thanks to all the rangers who made my trip last month possible and unforgettable while risking their life to protect the park! @wimvdoorn

Two young cheetah brothers are crouching down to drink from a water hole in the Serengeti. Cheetahs may be able to survive for long periods without drinking water and rely instead on the blood from their prey, but they don’t pass up an opportunity to drink when they can. They are still young because of the ruff of fur along their necks, which disappears when they mature.

Did you know that female turtles can store sperm for up to 4 years after mating? 😱

It’s World Turtle Day! Let’s celebrate these precious noble reptiles and raise awareness to protect both the endangered sea turtles, and the common pet turtles.

Leatherback turtles are amazing 😍💙

#Leatherback turtles named for their shell, which is leather-like rather than hard, like other turtles!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They are the largest sea #turtle species and also one of the most #migratory, crossing both Atlantic and Pacific oceans!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Although their distribution is wide, the numbers of leatherback turtles are seriously declining.. Globally, the leatherback status is listed as #vulnerable, but many subpopulations are critically #endangered ‼️

Happy National Turtles Day 2018🐢... World Turtle Day celebrates these noble reptiles and their place in the world, today also helps educate people and encourages them to take action to help protect, both the common pet turtle, and the ever endangered sea turtle. #worldturtleday2018 #protect #endangered #overhunting #pollution #plastic #ocean #cleanup #species #survival ... Here is Some Fun Facts........1. Turtles belong to one of the oldest reptile groups in the world. These creatures date back to the time of the dinosaurs, over 200 million years ago
______________________________________________________
2. Just like your bones, a turtle’s shell is actually part of its skeleton. It’s made up of over 50 bones which include the turtle’s rib cage and spine.
______________________________________________________
3. Turtles are easily recognised by their bony, cartilaginous shell. This super-tough casing acts like a shield to protect them from predators. turtle cannot come out of its shell. The turtle’s shell grows with them, so it’s impossible for them to grow too big for it.
______________________________________________________
4. Many baby turtles start life as carnivores but grow to eat more plants as they mature.Turtles are ‘amniotes’ – they breathe air and lay their eggs on land, although many species live in or around water.
_______________________________________________________
5. The oldest ever recorded, named Tu”i Malila, of Tonga Island, passed away at the grand old age of 188! Sadly, many species of turtle are endangered! 129 of approximately 300 species of turtle and tortoise on Earth today are either vulnerable, endangered, or critically endangered.

🔴 SOLD - Pua Kokua - congrats featured artist @jonchingart . Oil on wood, 12" x 12". Thanks MF for your support of the arts. .
.

The Ho’olaule’a (🙂 a celebration) exhibit that this lovely piece is part of runs through June 2nd @cactusgallery . The show highlights many of species on the #endangeredspecies list. .
.

These two species are endemic to the San Francisco Bay area (California) and both are threatened at different levels. Urban development and invasive species has made the Callippe Silverspot Butterfly a federally endangered species, with only a few remaining colonies left. .
.

The Franciscan Wallflower is listed as "at risk" by NatureServe and is being monitored and aided by the Presidio of San Francisco. Interestingly, it's name, Erysimum, comes from greek meaning "to help," a theme that drives this body of work. .
.

Jon created 8 beautiful #oilpaintings - including one other butterfly - for his featured spot. Visit the gallery Wed-Sat 11a-5p to see it in person and find it online at: https://cactusgalleryla.com/collections/ho-olaule-a-a-celebration

An oddity, but worth looking out for at the Crûg Farm Stand at Chelsea this week. This is a new species ofTrevesia. It's leaves are impressive enough, in fact that's what it's most prized for, along with a vicious stem. It holds onto its flowers for five years before they open, which it did in time for Chelsea this week. Likely the first time it's been seen in the UK.
I was Lucky enough to see it last year growing in high altitude Vietnam along riverbanks, where it's threatened thanks to black cardamon plantations.

Puffins are cute little birds In the Faroe Islands. Puffins can be seen on many souvenirs but the locals kill and eat them and you can also see puffins being served in many restaurants.
Other countries are trying hard to save and protect puffins. Experts expect Faroe puffins to be extinct by 2025!

Introducing the female, Katipo spider.
This deadly little native hottie is a member of the Black Widow family, which also includes the Australian Redback.
Katipo translated from its Maori name into English, means, Night Stinger! How fucking cool is that?
Picture early New Zealand Maori, asleep on their grass Matt's, on the ground. Not hard to guess how the name, Night Stinger came about.
The female of the species is is gracious host. Guy Katipo comes down for a bootie call, and miss Katipo chases him off a few times when he bangs his front legs on her web. Well eventually she gives it up for her guy, and when the rain and clouds have passed, ( Jappanesse, look it up) 😂 the guy goes to the edge of the web, and uses his front feet to clean himself. Miss Katipo, well satisfied, dosent eat him like some breeds, and she can give birth for the next two years from that one mating. They live on our coastlines, usually on the land side of the beach. They are found on both coastlines, on both the North and South Islands, but only go as far South as Greymouth on the West, and Christchurch on the East Coast.
They are not real aggressive, but their bite will kill children and the elderly. In saying that, it's extremely rare, and I don't recall any deaths in my lifetime. I have a few living in my shed.
These guys are now on our endangered list.
