The trade that sent Kobe to Los Angeles could’ve gone wrong because of Divac.
Like with the Mourning proposed trade, there was a complication. Divac, who loved Southern California, said he’d retire rather than move to Charlotte. So Bass - in a typically calm but firm voice - told me if Divac didn’t change his mind, the Hornets would just keep Bryant regardless of Bryant’s threat of going to play overseas... “Bob explained to us how much Vlade would help the team,” Shinn recalled. “Kobe’s agent let us know there was no way he would be a Hornet. It was Bob’s nature if someone didn’t want to be with us, he would work it out - like when Zo left, we actually got better.” Who knew how close it was.
It’s crazy to think that the trade that brought one of the greatest players, in my opinion the greatest ever to the Lakers could’ve failed if Vlade decided to do it and retire, Kobe’s 20 year legacy with the Lakers did not happen if this failed and him becoming the best Laker ever would have never happened, just think of how Kobe with the Hornets would look like. Whoever traded Kobe at the time is certainly regretting it now as they passed up on the mamba himself for a dude who was a bench player at best at the time when he got traded to the Hornets. From all Lakers fans all of us thank you for accepting. #Lakeshow#KB24 💜💛
