I never plan to forget my food that I’ve prepped at home, but sometimes it happens. This left me with only consuming about 12 g of protein and 12 g of fat since I woke up. After I left work at 1pm, I knew I needed to run some errands around #Centercity, but I also knew that I was starting go get “hangry”...and I didn’t want to let a domino effect bring me to eating junk food while I am out. Right next to @smoothieking is a pretzel place. A few spots down is Chick-fil-a, among other favorite fast food places. But buying this protein-packed smoothie (they have nutritional info!) over fried foods is who I am now. Trust me, I 100% believe in balance and I still will eat fried or fast foods when I plan it, but what I will not do is let my mistake this morning of walking out without my food be the cause for a poor decision. #thechoiceisyours 📢I WILL REACH MY GOALS! How do you control your hunger?
-
1. Prioritize protein: You know by now that protein is the most satiating of the 3 macros (Pesta Samuel 2014 Weigle et al 2005) meaning that it’s ideal for increasing fullness (CrovettI et al 1998).
-
2. Stay hydrated: Sometimes when you THINK you’re hungry you’re actually thirsty by staying hydrated & by drinking lots of water you can positively influence weight loss/appetite by reducing kcal intake (Daniels & Popkin 2010, Dennis et al 2009).

3. Eat your water: Most foods that contain lots of water are also low in kcals & high in volume which aids in reducing overeating & increasing fullness (Latner et al 2008 & 2009).

4. Increase fiber: As above, most “volume foods” are also high in fiber which has shown to be beneficial for increasing fullness & reducing kcal intake (Keenan et al 2006, Tucker & Thomas 2009).

5. Eat slowly: Eating fast is associated with overeating, lower satiety & “pleasantness” ratings vs eating slow (Andrade et al 2008) meaning that by eating slowly, you can increase fullness & actually enjoy the taste of your food more.

6. Have a coffee: Caffeine can have an acute effect on decreasing kcal intake by exerting “appetite suppressing-like” effects (Astrup et al 1990).

7. Sleep: Lack of sleep is associated with increases in ghrelin (Taheri et al 2004, Spiegel etal 2004) meaning that you are more likely to be hungrier going into a meal than when you get a good night sleep.

Here's a picture I like. It has nothing to do with my post.I'm in a miserable mood and don't feel like being on Instagram much. I don't feel like exercising today. I've been sharing lots of positive things I really do believe in but I also feel like I've had to hide a part of myself.

I'm sarcastic. I have a dark sense of humor. If you ask me a question, I'm either right or I don't know the answer. I'm not afraid to say it - most of the woowoo health stuff I see promoted on here is just that. I'm not a mom and I'm not going to be one. I think you only get to where you want to be with hard work. I don't "diet." .

I started this Instagram to document my health progress, to share it and help inspire others, to have and give accountability, and to lay the foundation of my business - I'm becoming a registered dietitian and I'm getting into online coaching. It's been kind of directionless and I haven't been myself, exactly, or at least I've been filtering myself. I like me. Maybe you don't, but I do. I'm not even sure who I'm talking to, but I promise I'm only going to be me and not a carbon copy.

SWIPE ➡️➡️➡️for a look 👀 at what I ate on my low carb diet yesterday. Yes I said the dirty word 🙊DIET.
I don’t want to be low carb for life. I miss candy. I miss alcohol. I miss fettuccine Alfredo! 🤤 But for NOW I’m on a DIET and LATER there will be room for moderation. For now, I’m losing weight and getting an understanding for how my body responds to the different things I put in it. Right now, on low carb, I’m starting to see my abs 👀 (whaaa???) and I’m enjoying that more than the food I gave up. Right now.
I do it because I feel better in my own skin and because my clothes fit better. Not to impress anyone, not to look better than anyone, for me. Just me. And if y’all know me, if I set my mind to something I achieve it! So for me, that means I’m 3 weeks in to an 8 week commitment. I committed to letting #1stphorm take the wheel on my nutrition. For now. .

If you’re looking to improve your health and body composition, you need to make friends with salad.

🥗 Greens are not calorically dense. You can eat A LOT of them before they significantly impact your energy requirement for the day. This is great for folks working with a caloric deficit, or for folks who love to eat alllll the food!

🥦 cruciferous vegetables in particular should be consumed daily. They generally contain a high level of antioxidants, they help delay carbohydrate absorption which helps reduce spikes in blood sugar, and they contain a TONNE of fibre. The fibre in these veggies also helps combat over estrogenization, a common condition for men and women who consume the modern North American diet.

🙅🏼‍♀️It’s not good enough to eat ice berg lettuce and call it a day folks! Look to include broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, arugula, bok choy and cauliflower in your daily diet.

🍴Eating them raw is preferable for maximum benefits, but if you can’t stand the taste, cook them and mow them down!!

These healthy food combinations will take your nutrition to the next level!

Synergy occurs when the interaction of two or more things produces an effect (beneficial in this case) greater than the sum of their separate effects. Certain nutrients work together to create greater health effects. Each food by itself has specific benefits, but the benefits of the combo are greater than the benefits from just adding their individual effects.

1️⃣Broccoli + Tomatoes:
Both have been shown to reduce the growth of tumors, but the combo is even more effective at shrinking the size of prostate-cancer tumors.

2️⃣Eggs + Cantaloupe:
Protein from eggs (or other meats) slows the absorption of glucose from carbs. This minimizes insulin & blood-sugar spikes, which slows the absorption of glucose and makes you feel full.

3️⃣Turmeric + Black Pepper:
The curcumin in turmeric is anticancer, anti-inflammatory, & tumor-fighting, but has low bioavailability on it’s own. Adding black pepper (piperine) to enhances curcumin's bioavailability by 1,000 times.

4️⃣Red Meat + Rosemary:
The antioxidants rosmarinic acid & carnosic acid in rosemary soak up the free radicals that appear in the charred meat when you grill at high temps over an open flame.

5️⃣Lemon + Kale:
Vitamin C helps make plant-based iron more absorbable, as non-heme (plant-based) iron is less absorbable.

6️⃣Apples + Chocolate:
Apples are high in an anti-inflammatory flavonoid called quercetin, which has a litany of benefits. Chocolate contains the flavonoid catechin (antioxidant -reduces risk for atherosclerosis & cancer). The combo loosens clumpy blood platelets, improving Cardiovascular health.

The mental transformation I've experienced through fitness far outweighs any physical changes I've made by a LANDSLIDE. Things we take for granted everyday like our HEALTH can be improved so much by making such small changes in routine... like eating a little bit cleaner or spending an hour working out instead of laying on the couch for 3 hours. If you can conquer the mental setbacks we've all experienced at the start, I promise it will get easier and those thoughts will become far and few between. Once you make your health a priority and stop taking it for granted, it will be something you never want to stop improving. The feeling I get knowing that I am in complete control of my thoughts, my emotions, as well as my physical strength and well being - is something I NEVER thought I would find through health and fitness.
