Understanding Muscular Fitness

Types of Strength

Strength can be measured and developed in several ways, each of which is highly specific. How the strength will be used should dictate the type of training and testing.

Dynamic Strength.

Also called isotonic, dynamic strength is defined as the maximum weight that can be lifted once with strict form (1RM). This is actually a measure of strength at the hardest part of the lift, usually at the beginning. Because the mechanical advantage of your muscle lever system changes, a lift such as a Bicep curl becomes easier after you overcome the initial resistance and angle of the pull. Dynamic strength measurements are related to performance and work. Weight lifting with machines or free weights is the most common forms of isotonic training. (“Isotonic” means “same tension”) Static Strength.

The measure of static strength is achieved when you exert maximal force against an immovable object. Also called isometric strength, it is specific to the angle at which it was trained. It doesn’t necessarily reflect dynamic strength or strength throughout the range of motion. You train by exerting near maximum force against an immovable object. The muscle doesn’t change length appreciably during the contraction. (Isometric means “same length”) Isokinetic Strength.

Isokinetic strength is measured with an expensive electronic or hydraulic apparatus. It allows the exertion of maximal force throughout the range of motion, as well as the control of speed of contraction. Through such devices have become popular testing aids, it is not yet clear to what extent strength throughout the range of motion is related to performance. (Isokinetic means “same length”) Sports physiotherapists use isokinetic devices in rehabilitation exercises.

Vitamin B12 deficiency affects nearly HALF of ALL adults...40 PERCENT of Americans are estimated to have low levels of B12. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Effects of low levels of B12 on the brain can include: that “tired all the time” feeling, memory issues, trouble concentrating, depression, anxiety, confusion, disorientation, and brain fog. Who can relate? 🙋🏼‍♀️🙋🏼‍♀️ In other words, hardworking B12 is CRITICAL to your health and well-being.

Now, I KNEW that B-vitamins were crucial...I had been taking my B-complex all along and thought I was good. NOPE!Upon further reading, a pill form of B12 MAY NOT be the best route for many reasons and it all comes down to ABSORPTION.

What could inhibit absorption of B12?? Well, there are many - but for me, I believe it comes down to low stomach acid.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Once in the stomach, a protein called IF binds to B12 to help it survive. If you do not have this, B12 will not survive the trip from the stomach to the small intestine.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Having enough IF on board is critical for absorbing enough B12. BUT if your stomach acid is too low - because of say a vegan/vegetarian diet, stress, aging, antibiotics, etc. - your body isn’t going to produce enough IF.

SO...what’s the best form to take?!

Aside from the fact that if you think you have absorption issues or not - bypass the guess work and go SUBLINGUAL.

Probiotics!!
Ok a good ol kombucha rant. Kombucha is good for you for many many reasons but first off it is filled with probiotics. It helps keep your digestive system in line and is good for gut health. Probiotics also promote a healthy immune system and if you’re like me (constantly at a state of mildly sick), kombucha definitely helps. @healthade is my favorite brand because everything in it is REAL. You have to be careful because some brands add loads of extra sugar. This brand keeps it simple and tastes better than any other brands in my opinion!
