Meet Signor Corrado, the most famous Barber of Ortigia and beyond. Corrado is 83 years young and has a strong clientele both with locals and non. Corrado’s Bottega (shop) has been in the barbering business since 1895 - the style it was built is Art Nouveau, better referred to in Italian as ‘Stile Liberty’. The beautiful interior carries the original mirrors, and beautifully decorated wall panels which are so pleasing to the eyes painted in lovely colour tones that relax you once you walk inside. All is intact and in pristine condition. Corrado told me that he started learning the barbering trade when he was only thirteen. He came to work in this shop in the early 1980s. Before him the Barbershop was operated by another gentleman whose name was Garofalo. The last photo, which Corrado himself holds, shows a young Corrado, many years ago, attending to a client. Signor Corrado has been featured on Italian TV (RAI) and has also been interviewed by BBC. I came to know about this wonderful man some time ago and this time round, I wanted to definitely go and meet him. As soon as I stepped in his shop I immediately felt at home. He spoke to me at length about his work, the history of the shop, his family and his wife, whom he loved dearly and who passed away some time ago.
It was such an honour to meet this wonderful, cheerful man - such a lively character. Corrado is part of Ortigia’s past and present and plays a very important role in the beauty of Ortigia Island. A very interesting man who has so many stories to tell.
Dear Signor Corrado: Grazie for sharing lovely moments with me - I am so honored to have met you! Such a kind hearted and patient gentleman.
