An autograph verse signed by Nobel Prize winner, John Galsworthy, who was born on this day in 1867. The verse was written in 1929 for publication in the Pax Mundi book. Galsworthy writes, in full, 'God send us wit to banish far, The incense and the reeking breath, The lances and the fame of war, And all the devilments of death. Let there be wisdom and increase, The harvest reconcilement brings. So shall we see the Eyes of Peace, And feel the wafting of her wings'. The Pax Mundi was an anthology of sentiments on peace published in Switzerland by the World League for Peace. Between 1925 and 1932 many notable persons from around the world were asked to comment on the prospects of world peace and the volume included contributions from Marie Curie, Guglielmo Marconi, Albert Einstein, Rabindranath Tagore and many others.
