Now I'm sure that this list needs a bit of explaining. By surprising, I don't mean by events or such, but rather by which film had the biggest impact on me that I didn't expect it to have.
Blade Runner 2049: I waited so long to see this film, and I finally got the chance to go see it on my birthday last year. It really surprised me in the fact that I never expected it to become one of my all time favorites, or be as good as the original. -
A Ghost Story: I knew little about this film going in. I was expecting a horror film, but instead I saw one of the best films of last year, and something that made me think. I didn't expect it to be my favorite A24 film. -
Green Room: Went in expecting a thriller, and got a deep and horrifying ride. I was surprised at how much I liked it, and the direction it went. -
Her: Honestly I didn't know what to feel going in. I knew it'd be weird, but I never thought it would stand up to be one of my all time favorites! -
In Bruges: I went into this expecting a dark comedy, because this film is very mismarketed, but it's really a deep drama. I came out finding yet another favorite, that's a complete gem! -
Mystic River: I didn't expect the film to hit me so hard, or to stand to as much quality as it did. Truly moving picture. -
A.I. Artificial Intelligence: People give this hate, and I was skeptical. This is not only a favorite of mine, but it's my favorite Spielberg and his best. There, I said it. -
Manhunter: People overlook this gem, and I didn't expect it to be as good as SoTL. I can say it's honeslty much better (I still love SoTL). -
The Last Picture Show: I randomly got this from the library after hearing about it the day before. I expected nothing, and came out of it knowing it's one of the best, most important, thought provoking, and relevant films ever made. -
Easy Rider: I knew it'd be great, but it's one of the best. It made me realize Dennis Hopper is my favorite actor. -
Lolita: I was scared by the runtime, and didn't expect it to be as good as other Kubrick films. It went by quick, and is probably Kubrick's best early work.
Susan Lacy made a beautiful film about the creator of our time's most beloved filmmaker - Steven Spielberg.
If you have not seen the film already, check it out and be inspired. Then, go out and make something.
