A lost world
Buried deep in the jungles of Campeche state is a Mayan ruin site called Calakmul. At one time this place was home to 50,000 people. A fact I find hard to get my head around given its remoteness.
Wild turkeys wander amidst the foliage, toucans languish in the trees and the blood curdling call of the howler monkeys fills the air. It feels almost like a lost world. In fact some of the ruins are still yet to be awoken from beneath a thick layer of jungle.
It's not as famous or glossy (or crowded!) as sites like Chitchen Itza or Monte Alban but the untamed beauty and vastness of Calakmul is awe inspiring.
