'When Peter Hennessey and I set up The Basement artist-run-space in Collins Street, we were entirely self-funded VCA grads. I wore the same pair of jeans for three years. We didn't go out for dinner. My sister used to give me $20 to buy cappuccinos. But we had an art gallery. We used lights found in the dumpster of the NGV. It was as much about showing art as it was about making it. It was ephemeral and represented us at that time in our lives. You don't enter the art world, you have to build it with the people around you.' @patricia.piccinini encouraged us today that the art world recognises persistence at the @nava_visualarts conference. #futureforward18
#collectionhighlight: Tracey Moffatt's 'First jobs' series is a visual feast of 'lolly colours', with the aesthetic of old films. They evoke nostalgia, triggering memories of our own first jobs and formative experiences. What was your first job?

'Maximum impact from minimum materials' is the design philosophy of @phasmahammer in this playful costume constructed entirely from found materials. With an automotive head and bird-like legs, the character embodies @phasmahammer's fascination with fluid identities and composite creatures. See it star in Club Ate's 'Ex Nilalang (Lolo Ex Machina)' 2015 in our Contemporary galleries, LG, until 26 August.

Art with bite. Yoko Ono's 'A box of smile' 1971 is disarmingly simple and arrestingly poetic. A toothy, disembodied grin emerges unexpectedly from a small black box. 'Power and Imagination: Conceptual Art' opens today 10am – 5pm, Level 2, free.

'Fantastic tour for our students. It brought the art to life, and exceeded expectations,' – Encounter Lutheran College, SA teacher. It's exciting to see our smaller visitors use their critical and creative thinking to respond to the art in our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander galleries, Level 1 on World Indigenous Peoples Day.
