To round off our week highlighting the incredible work of our #volunteers: enter the wickedly funny Gudrun. She's particularly handy with a needle and thread, and the only volunteer working in Conservation.

Gudrun sews the padding and packing for the NGA’s textile collection. She has padded and packed the entire NGA Ballet Russes collection, and most of the fashion collection. We couldn't do it without her.

'My painting takes on its particular abstract quality because only in this way can I express my search for direct mystical experience,' – John Olsen.

At 90, John Olsen is one of Australia’s most accomplished and prolific artists, with a strong connection to the NGA. You can help us to acquire his evocative masterwork ‘Towards Lake Eyre’ for the national collection. Contribute directly through the Masterpieces for the Nation Fund 2018 via our website.

It is said that David Hockney has synaesthesia, the ability to see colours when he hears music. This week, NGA volunteer guide Susan Marshall has curated an Art + Sound playlist inspired by Hockney's own taste in music. Listen in the Orde Poynton Gallery, Level 2 from 1pm Saturday 26 May. #volunteerweek #NVW2018

Sadly, we farewell the endless summer that was 'David Hockney prints' this weekend – closing Sunday 27 May.

Kerin has been a #volunteer guide at the NGA since its opening in 1982. ‘We really keep getting reinvented,’ she says of her experience.

‘John Brack taught at Melbourne Grammar School. This work is special to me because I went to the Girls’ school down the road. My school was red-brick, and I had pig-tails just like that.’

In a challenge of astronomical proportions @doctor_karl has rallied the entire nation in an attempt to break the #GuinnessWorldRecord for the Most people stargazing #today. We'll be doing our own stargazing with a celestial display headed to our Australian galleries in September. Keep watch. #onthisday

This is Kim. She began #volunteering at the NGA in 2012, and now runs the #volunteer Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Group.

'Aboriginal art is very exciting and beautiful. As a guide, we find out why we intrinsically feel this. I particularly love the art from the Western Desert,' she says.

There was never any doubt that Cartier would make a splash at the Royal wedding – earrings and bracelet. #CartierNGA

Regram @bbcnews: The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have just released these three official photographs from their wedding day. Kensington Palace say the newly-weds are "delighted" with the official portraits taken by @alexilubomirski. Harry and Meghan have also thanked well-wishers who gathered in Windsor and also all those who watched the wedding across the UK, Commonwealth, and around the world. PHOTO: ALEXI LUBOMIRSKI/PA WIRE

This enormous sapphire was owned and worn by the beautiful and charismatic Queen Marie of Romania. King Ferdinand sent her to plead on behalf of Romania in the Paris Peace Conference 1919. Romania emerged from the peace process with more land! See her 478-carat sapphire in ‘Cartier: The Exhibition’.

Meet Duleep. A former engineer by trade, he says he brings the 'street cred' to the #volunteer Asian Art Group. You'll find him guiding school students and adult visitors through our galleries during the week.

'I get as much out of it as they do. Whether kids or adults, as long as they go away having had an interesting experience,' he says.

Our #volunteers make the NGA come alive for our visitors every day.

@rosslyndpiggott's work has a poetic aesthetic – influenced by natural forms, Japanese design and surrealistic figuration. When you visit, walk by and look closely at 'Void blossom' to see the silver line glisten as it almost cuts through her painting in 'Infinite Conversations', Free, Level 1.
