Artist Phoebe Anna Traquair was born #onthisday 1852, she was a leading figure within the Scottish Arts and Crafts movement and worked in an extraordinarily wide variety of media. In 1920, Phoebe Anna Traquair became the first woman member of the Scottish Royal Academy, reflecting her status as a leading professional designer at a time when art and design were still dominated by men.
She was influenced by the poet, artist and visionary William Blake, by the Pre-Raphaelites and by her travels in Italy, her work was detailed and romantic, and her subjects often allegorical, religious or mythical. #Art #Artists #womenArtists #5WomenArtists #Traquair #Scotland

Our #TuesdayThoughts are of this necklace by Charles de Temple, a pioneer in the method of melting and transforming gold into abstract forms embracing shape and texture. American born, London based jeweller, Charles De Temple (born 1929) was highly influential during the 1960s and 70s. This forms part of our #ModernistJewellery display at the National Museum of Scotland #Modernist #Jewellery #Design

This glittering gold disc is one of four found in 1858 in Orkney, in a prominent round barrow – one of the ‘Knowes of Trotty’. (‘Knowe’ is the word for a mound or hill.) Too large to be a button, it's likely it was worn on a special garment such as a cloak. Not only is it beautiful, but it also gives us an amazing insight into long distance travel in the Bronze Age. Look who landed in our Museum this morning – astronaut Tim Peake! As the European Space Agency's first British astronaut, Tim Peake spent six incredible months aboard the International Space Station conducting experiments, walking in space and even running a marathon. What would you ask an astronaut? We got a chance to ask him a couple of quick questions, so take a listen to what he had to tell us! #SoyuzTour #TimPeake #Edinburgh #Scotland

#ArchitectureTrail The design of the Museum of Scotland incorporates many references to Scotland’s history and landscapes. The vertical lines of the walkways over Hawthornden Court are inspired by the strings of a Scottish Clàrsach and narrow arrow loop windows recall medieval fortifications. The exterior of the building is clad in Morayshire sandstone, described by architect Gordon Benson as ‘the oldest exhibit in the building.’.
Look out for our #ArchitectureTrail panels and explore our striking building further on your next visit to the National Museum of Scotland. #Architecture #Edinburgh #Scotland #Architecture_hunter #architecture_lovers #architecturedrawing #architecturesketch #Illustrations #Sketch
