Stocked with trout from Nov - April - Locust Shade Park offers ample opportunities for #anglers looking to reel in a catch or two over the cooler fall and winter months. 📸: @gabriella_hoffman
First urban trout fishing trip of the season was a SUCCESS! It was even made better with my new @wsisports get up from the Fall 2018 line. I kept extra warm as a result of it, as temps went down to 38F. 😱
I spent most of the morning and afternoon casting (and missing a few) trout on my @waltonrods 6wt fly rod, which is so durable and good. With the help of an experienced fly angler, I learned how to successfully tie, select, and put dry flies and streamers on the water with more ease—something I struggled with in the past. I also perfected my fly cast for different flies, which got me a few prominent bites. I nearly had what was considered a “big fish” on my fly line, borrowing a Powerbait like nymph, but didn’t strike in time. Darn. The trout were not budging on the flies I had. Bummer. But by trial by fire, I picked up on my @orvisarlington @orvisflyfishing 101 course I took last year and grew my skill set a lot. Cannot wait to check out a few more spots in fall/winter in NoVA, Shenandoah, western Maryland, and outside Baltimore in more natural streams. I think I’ll be more successful on the fly then.
But I wasn’t deterred.
The bait cast bite, on the other hand, was hot. I couldn’t miss it. I got three rainbows — my most at Locust Shade Park in one setting. Hooray! Perfect timing on @marines Birthday and near @mcbquantico . #Oorah!
It was a good but chilly day on the water. Glad I have a Virginia freshwater license and trout stamp—it goes a long way! 🎣 •
