Today we had a bike tour discovering an area of Southern India witness to a past of great prosperity, ended with World War II.
The Nettukottai of Chettinadu belong to a very prolific business community, which in ancient times moved from India to foreign lands such as Burma, Ceylon, Java, Sumatra, Malaysia, Singapore and Vietnam (Saigon) and spread their culture in those lands. The Chettiars, following a tsunami, moved from coastal zones to the interior, in Chettinad, in the South-East region of Tamil Nadu about 35 km west of the gulf of Bengal coast line. At First, chettinad was composed of 96 villages, which today reduced to about 75. Chettinad is a set of well planned villages with well-defined roads, basins to store and provide water to the city, an organized market, temples and all the people needed. Thanks to trade, the Nettukotai, built magnificent palaces that were first of all the reserve of their immense richness. They have been a well-known community for their cultural and philanthropic heritage. In addition to building Shiva and Murugan temples wherever they went, they were also involved in the construction of schools and universities. They began their business with salt trade before switching to gems and finally using their wealth to become moneylenders and financiers at the beginning of the th century.
But with the invasion of Burma by the Japanese and wars in their areas of trade, they began to decay. Today you can see the vestiges of charming palaces, some still beautifully kept. Others, most of them, now in ruins.
Beautiful bike ride discovering the most beautiful houses.
