I have to confess I don’t really know what each of the 3 official judges of a boxing title fight are looking for or what they are seeing when scoring the match. This is the official scorecard from last night’s Middleweight championship between Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez. It’s a bit confusing. The fight was close for sure, the scores were right, I just saw them as backwards. I saw GGG doing enough to win and Canelo’s head being snapped back an awful lot. Golovkin won the final 3 rounds pretty clearly by what I saw. I don’t know, I guess the action must be that much clearer at ringside than on television, because I’m always missing something that the judges must be seeing and though Canelo is now the WBA and WBC Middleweight champion I’m having trouble seeing how.
Of note, to compound my confusion, Harold Lederman, Stephen. A. Smith, and Teddy Atlas, 3 men with serious boxing analysis pedigree and experience, all saw last night’s match pretty much the same way I did.
