Finally spent some time burning the midnight oil and making a piece for myself amidst the final commissions of the year ✨
This tie dye fabric is something I made during diversity training for the diabetic youth camp I have attended and worked at for the past 12+ years. We chose colors based off of parts of our identity, and the amount we added of each color represented how much of our identity it took up. There were things like gender, age, culture, education, etc, but the one that hit me the most was green for disabled. I covered my bandana in green. I have multiple chronic conditions that constantly dictate my abilities in life, but damn am I proud to call myself disabled. Because maybe my inability to do one thing will lease me somewhere new; maybe it will show me what I’m better at. I know that even if I’m redirected because of a disability, i am still capable and able to do what I want to and need to do. I am so damn proud of my body.
