¡Aqui Radio Rebelde!
.
A 2.5-mile hike deep into the Sierra Maestra mountains takes you to the remains of la Comandancia de la Plata.
.
While in exile in Mexico, Castro partnered with Che Guevara. In November 1956, 82 members of the 26th of July Movement, including the Castros, Cienfuegos, and Guevara, purchased a yacht named Granma and set sail for Cuba. When they reached the southeastern coast of Cuba, Batista’s army was waiting for them. The 20 survivors made it to the base of Pico Turquino in the Sierra Maestra Mountains.
.
The rebel army set up camp in the thick jungle where they hid out for a year to plan their guerrilla war. They built 16 buildings for their camp, which became the revolution headquarters.
.
Guevara set up the clandestine Radio Rebelde in February 1958. From the top of their mountain hq, Radio Rebelde broadcasted first-hand reports on the battles against the Batista Army and denounced the atrocities of the dictatorship. It also provided round-the-clock statements by rebel leaders, and other messages to the general population.
.
Today, Radio Rebelde broadcasts 24 hours a day and is located in the Cuban Insitute of Radio and Television in Vedado, Havana.

The (Winged) Lion of Venice •
The title “The Lion of Venice” refers specifically to the beast in the first picture, perched atop a granite column in Piazza San Marco. Because of this statue, the winged lion became a symbol of Venice and began to appear in other incarnations all around the city. You can see some of these in the other pictures in this post. •
The bronze lion was brought to Venice from far overseas and set upon its column in the 12th century. The statue, however, is much older than that. It is thought to have begun its life around 300 BC, in southern Turkey. It travelled a long ways to reach its new home in Venice, but its journey was to be longer yet. •
After Napoleon conquered the city in 1797, the lion was packed off to France. The French were not terribly careful with the 2,000-year-old artifact and several pieces broke off in transport. Once he was all patched up again, the lion was displayed proudly as part of a fountain in Paris. •
After Napoleon’s reign came to an end, it was time for the lion to go home to Venice. In 1815, the French began to take the statue down — and managed to drop it, smashing it into 20 pieces. The many bronze cat shards were gathered up and shipped off to Venice anyway. Thankfully, the Venetians were gentler with their lion than the French. They lovingly tended to kitty’s wounds and in 1816, he went back up on his column where he still stands today. •

Playing Blitz, you know what it feels like when your ship is on fire. But can you imagine being blown up and burned for 20 days straight? That's the fate of the Algérie! She was a French heavy cruiser that served during the early years of World War II. One of the last of the so-called 'Treaty Cruisers', she was considered one of the best designs commissioned by any of the naval powers. After the French defeat in 1940, Algérie remained with the Vichy fleet based at Toulon. When the Germans invaded the so-called "Free Zone" in November 1942, she was still there, which put her on the list for the scuttling of the French fleet. Not only was she blown up and burned for 20 days, but later, when the Italians raised her in sections in 1943, her remains were bombed and sunk again before they were finally raised and broken up for scrap in 1949. Oh well. At least, your tier VII cruiser Algérie can lead a much more glorious life - she's now the main prize in our 'La Royale' collection event that ends tomorrow. So did you get her already, Commanders? 🇫🇷

Here is the very impressive Warwick Castle. The building of it was started in 1068 by William the Conqueror. As you can imagine, it has a rich history! It’s also a place to take kids as there are lots of activities from meeting Father Christmas to Bird of Prey displays. I would recommend a visit! This underground structure is a Native American sauna we found in a historic Native American village in the redwoods just off the Pacific Coast highway. There was no one there when we arrived. One sign told us that local tribes still use the village for gatherings and celebrations. Another warned us to watch out for snow lions. I would very much like to try this sauna on a cliff above the Pacific in the shadow of redwood trees!

Thimble, used by soldiers to sew the uniforms. Sometimes it happens to find objects of this type in the trenches. During the moments of pause from the battle and the duties within the trenches, the soldiers employed free time doing repair work of their uniforms, creating handicrafts or building objects useful for their daily life at the front.

In Stockholm we are now in the darkest period of the year with not more than 6 hours of daylight.
To keep dark at bay and also to celebrate the Advent season, many Swedes hang electrical paper stars - Adventstjärnor - and/or put up wooden triangles with little electrical lights in the windows. The star symbolises the Star of Betlehem.

Nowadays, the advent stars comes in many different colors and patterns, but the original advent star came to Sweden from the German village Herrnhut in Sachsen in the beginning of the 19th Century.
The star from Herrnhut makes a special appearance with its 25 points and is getting more and more popular again.
These windows can be admired in the Old Town of Stockholm, belonging to the cute little lamp store @affarenigamlastan

The Great Council Chamber •
Venice’s Great Council comprised 1,000-2,000 members, all men from aristocratic families. They met every Sunday in this grand chamber — not only the largest room in the palace, but also among the largest in Europe. The paintings on the walls and ceilings depict allegories and important moments in Venetian history. •

For people all around the world, the junk boat is Hong Kong, a sort of visual shorthand so instantaneous it doesn’t bear explaining. Yet how many Hongkongers have sailed upon or even seen a real Chinese junk? Not one of the harbour cruises motoring with branded sails just for show, but a real, working model with weatherworn canvas bellying out in the South China Sea breeze?

The sad truth is that the junk, so emblematic of our hometown, has been allowed to flounder in local waters. But the good news is that far from our shores, the Hong Kong junk is alive and well, and could even be staging a historic comeback. Mr. Hardy's taming of the Zebra.

Mr. Hardy was a notable horse trainer who lived just off Cromwell Road in London in the late 1800s.

In 1889 he was hired by Leopold de Rothschild after a bet was made regarding Hardy’s ability to train any horse. Rothschild had wagered that Hardy could train a team of zebras to pull a coach through London.

After two years of hard work Hardy completed the task and at six o’clock one morning a team of zebras were seen pulling a coach through London! What an incredible sight that would have been.
