Signs of things to come! We had a short visit at the Armenian Museum of America this afternoon and were greeted by Arevik Tserunyan. She is the artist-in-residence at the museum with a show of her work opening October 23. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
So it begins, listening to the stories of Armenia through the words of women artists. ⠀
I look forward to long conversations with the artists of New Illuminations and the new people I will meet in Gyumri. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Look at this beautiful rug from the collection. I wonder how the ancient will filter into the contemporary? Armenia has such a rich cultural heritage. ⠀

One month ago was Backyard Art Camp-a wild outdoor immersion in the book arts, ritual, and community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I believe our journals are sacred refuge, so why not make them exquisite places to explore our inner lives and make meaning through a daily practice? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Two weeks from today I will be on my way to Gyumri from Yerevan, preparing to teach two workshops with Armenian artists. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Am I excited?⠀
Yup.⠀
Nervous?⠀
Yup.⠀
On the cliffs edge of a new now? For sure. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Would you please considering donating to help make New Illuminations a success? I spend three weeks there teaching and interviewing women, learning more about their lives, and inspiring them to blaze brightly. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You can make a tax deductible donation through the link in my profile. You’ll be entered into a raffle for a beautiful image of Gyumri by photographer Oliver Doyle. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Here is to the places that creative inquiry takes us. Into both the journal and the world, rising forth with an open heart.⠀

It’s true. Two weeks from today I am on a women’s panel of writers at the Milford Readers and Writers Festival in New Jersey. Then, the next day, October 1 I leave for Armenia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
If you’d like to join a growing circle of artists supporting artists by contributing to this project that brings the book arts as a tool of empowerment to Armenia women, then hop on!!!! Each tax-deductible donation enters you into a raffle for one of three prints of Gyumri by Oliver Doyle. Please find link in my profile.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What’s next in this fine Sunday? A dip in the river and a big batch of plum jam. Do you spy the Monarch in our garden?⠀

I decided to answer some questions about my project New Illuminations in a blog post today.⠀
New Illuminations is an artist residency in Gyumri, Armenia. The blog answers that question you just had about where Gyumri is. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I think questions are certain tonic.⠀
Curiosity is a heart balm.⠀
We begin to feel seen and witnessed when a kind person sits with us to inquire. They stick around long enough for solid full answers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This takes time.⠀
My blog post today is more than 140 characters.⠀
In fact there are beautiful characters in my blog, like Naz Gasparyan. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I’d love to know you took the time to read it.⠀
It would make me dizzy with joy if you shared it with your people. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Go to www.suzibanksbaum.com/blog. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

And go ahead, ask me another question here.⠀

This week I’m sharing images I made at a workshop I attended in Yogyakarta with the incredible and talented @johnstanmeyer and @lindabournane of @vii. .
.
.
I will be sharing a little of this beautiful story of Girli, all former street kids from Indonesia. They currently live, work and raise their own families in Yogyakarta, all not wanting their own children to grow up as they did—on the streets. In the mid-80s, these street boys formed a collective community with help from activist Pak Didid Dananto and named themselves Girli. Through unimaginable hardship, heartache, addiction, and imprisonment, they remain a family, a brotherhood, bonded by their life growing up on the streets of Yogyakarta. This story is a work in progress. .
.
.
Caption: Kampung Kali Code, one of the poorest districts on the Code river, is where Girli first settled as a community, moving from the central train station of Yogyakarta. They lived in a house provided to them with the assistance of Romo Mangun, a priest, essayist, social worker, and human rights activist. Being of and living on the street, Kali Code never became a permanent housing option, as Girli used to come and go as they chose and were always on the move.

I go to Gyumri for women like Ofel Militosyan, who does make books-teeny tiny book pendants and leather wrapped journals. Ofel attended the beginners workshop last November and brought her unique style to her paste papers and journal interiors.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Ofel joins the advanced group this October to continue our work in New Illuminations. We will have a master class with a specialist from the Matenadaran to learn the Armenian binding style.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Being with Ofel, learning about her life and her dreams and sharing space in the workshops, I witness her incredible focus, captured here by Sona Andreasyan.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Follow me here and at www.newilluminations.com to learn more about my artist residency in Gyumri. And please join a robust group of supporters who are helping me gather 300 donations of $60 each to fund this project.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What happens when artists support other artists is this, for me: The world gets smaller and our resources expand. My heart fills with love and this community begins to sustain itself.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I will share more of Ofel’s work from Gyumri.⠀
Til then,⠀

It’s true. I will turn 60 this coming Saturday and I have this vision of 300 donations of 60 dollars each, to fund my 3rd residency in Gyumri, Armenia. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I work with artists there, primarily women, in the book arts to build new skills and link them to a lineage of book artistry in manuscripts. Armenia has made hand bound books for centuries-just not in the past 100 years or so. There are Armenian book artists living in the diaspora, but in country, I have not yet found any book artists. So I am helping to inspire a growing group of women artists to make and work into hand bound books-to tell their own stories of real life in Armenia in contemporary manuscripts. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Fundraising is an odd activity. I invite people to support this project to extend love, care, and witness to a much underserved and unseen population. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This work grows me.⠀
It impacts many lives in a city that struggles with poverty, trauma, restrictive roles and lack of opportunity for women. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

So, I will be back in Gyumri in October. My talented coordinator Ani Ginosyan is enrolling artists and plans are firming up. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Do you want to be one of my 300 donors? Please follow the link in my profile, join my list for weekly updates from Armenia and please make a donation. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
It’s my birthday month and I cannot think of a better way to celebrate than by bringing supplies, love, and witness to my Gyumri community. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How about it? ⠀
Please share!⠀
Next week I will announce a raffle involving some beautiful artwork by a dear friend. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

We are artists supporting artists.⠀

Self portrait of a woman overwhelmed by goodness. Wednesday I sent a preview of my fundraise video to the followers of my project in Armenia, New Illuminations. This was to be a soft launch with the official launch next week. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But from that soft liftoff already so much kindness. Time for a dance break! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Many donations and an offer by my friend Evelyn Asher to donate a portion of her consulting fees for the next ten days to go towards this project. When I plotted this raise with my wise sisterhood, Heidi Johnson and Lynnette Najimy, we knew that “artists supporting other artists” was our driving theme. Oliver Doyle donated three stunning images from his time in Gyumri as prizes for a raffle for all donors. Sarah Shepley sent a package of her prints to give to my Armenian artists. Lynnette made our video with music donated by Berkshire musician JoAnne Spies. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Really, you all answer my prayers by being the bright shining lights that you are. Thank you love beams. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I am off to spend the afternoon writing then making chutney from all the tomato and peach bounty of the Berkshires.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
You just never know how much love might show up on any given day. For it and always, I am grateful.⠀

Love. Acceptance. Honor. Fear. Injustice. Healing. Survival. (Swipe ↔️) Some of the words that keep going through my mind as I look through images I made and shared over the past two weeks at a workshop I attended in Yogyakarta with the incredible and talented @johnstanmeyer and @lindabournane. It has taken me exactly one week to begin sharing a little of the beautiful story I made of kind, hard-working, and giving men, all former street kids from Indonesia. They currently live, work and raise their own families in Yogyakarta, all not wanting their own children to grow up as they did—on the streets. In the mid-80s, these street boys formed a collective community (with help from activist Pak Didid Dananto) and named themselves Girli (from panGIR kaLI = river bank). Through unimaginable hardship, heartache, addiction, and imprisonment, they remain a family, a brotherhood, bonded by their life growing up on the streets of Yogyakarta.
This was an extremely intense and soul-enriching experience with its fair share of ups and downs and drama, where I almost gave up. Amin, (one of the oldest Girli), told me to not give up and that his brothers would accept me soon. Thank you to Amin and all the Girli guys who in the end did accept me for an albeit brief time into their homes and on the street. I’m forever changed by this humbling experience. I will continue to make images of this brotherhood here in Surabaya and if possible around all of Indonesia. Girli are in every city all throughout this beautiful and welcoming nation. By collaborating with Pak Didid and expanding the story with in depth interviews, we hope to give back to Girli and create something with and for them to cherish and assist with their annual Girli reunions. Terima kasih banyak Girli! Thank you @cipots for all the translation and help.
Caption: Amin, age 47, is married and a father of 5. He’s one of the first street kids to join Girli in 1984. Seen here at his home on Eid Al Adha. Yogyakarta, Indonesia | August 22, 2018

Sunday, I had the pleasure of meeting these two delightful men, Tom and Ethan, father and son. I had watched them all afternoon at Bread & Puppet Theater, talking, listening, looking. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I met them on a path later, in this late afternoon light and knew I had to make an image of them. After kind conversation I learned that Tom is Armenian, making Ethan his son, half Armenian. Perplexed by my interest in Armenia, I told them about New Illuminations and my desire to return in October. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

What is it about my love of Armenia that on an afternoon surrounded by 100s of people, I fall in love with the two Armenians in the crowd & find them in this light, to connect over what we have in common? Tom and Ethan Azarian are folk singers from Burlington, Vermont. ⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
New Illuminations is an artist residency in Gyumri, Armenia where I work with women artists empowering them through the book arts & connecting them to the Armenian cultural icon of illuminated manuscripts. We are making new work, bringing the ancient art into contemporary practice.⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Join a robust crowd of supporters of this project by making a tax-deductible donation today. Please follow the link in my bio. And follow #newilluminations to witness how art connects communities in need of love and witness.⠀

Repost from @johnstanmeyer - Swipe Photo - Such a beautiful market in Surabaya, where layers of life and the kindness of these women welcomed me in my curiosity. We’re only days away from the start of the storytelling workshop I’m hosting with @viiphoto colleague @lindabournane in Yogyakarta, so pleased to be back in this most wonderful land in Central Java, Indonesia.
