|Constellations| Analog photographs of our family friend and artist Ricky Knies for the 24th Bienal de São Paulo in 1998.
His work with multilayered pictures and different motifs, which are cropped and omitted, convex and concave distorted, composed in box-shaped diptychs, reflects upon the several levels of constellations and scrutinizes especially the moment of childhood- and old family photos. Watching them evokes blurry memories of something different to what the picture is telling us now. So Ricky’s artwork is a study of hidden places and other times saved in dreams, desires, phantasies and fears which are all isolated and unrelated amidst a world of obvious associations and the visible network of relationships.
The two upended boxes are showing my young parents from behind, walking into their partner‘s face (title: „to you, only to you“) ... And at least you can see me here as the 6 years old child playing hide and seek (title first picture: „... who is it?“ // title second picture: „...what is it?“) ... my very early steps into the world of art 👩🎨 #rickyknies #constellations #bienalsaopaulo #exhibition #photography #analog #object #art #multilayer #threedimensional #blackwhitephotography #bw #convex #concave #boxes #closedeyes #portraitphotography #doubleexposure #cropped #hideandseek
