Running Across France
The past two-months have been nothing short of an Epic Challenge - physically, mentally and spiritually. Running across Spain, along the Camino Santiago - was just the challenge needed in order to take on Southern France. Greeted by smiling horses + a sign reading "It's Charlie" (father's name) I arrived safe, healthy and feeling blessed in Arles, France. Completing the first section of my trans europe run and my winter break destination.
Looking forward to watching some rugby and soccer live while prepping for my push into Italy and beyond. ■
The Arènes d'Arles is a Roman amphitheatre in the southern French town of Arles. This two-tiered Roman amphitheatre is probably the most prominent tourist attraction in the city of Arles, which thrived in Roman times.
Built in 90 AD, the amphitheatre was capable of seating over 20,000 spectators, and was built to provide entertainment in the form ofchariot races and bloody hand-to-hand battles. Today, it draws large crowds forbullfighting during the Feria d'Arles.
With the fall of the Empire in the 5th century, the amphitheatre became a shelter for the population and was transformed into afortress with four towers (the southern tower is not restored). The structure encircled more than 200 houses, becoming a real town, with its public square built in the centre of the arena and two chapels, one in the centre of the building, and another one at the base of the west tower.
This new residential role continued until the late 18th century, and in 1825 through the initiative of the writer Prosper Mérimée, the change to national historical monument began. ■
Vincent Van Gogh arrived in Arles on 20 February 1888. After two years in Paris, he was tired of the bustle and demands of city life and longed for the sunshine and vibrant colours of the south. When he got to Arles, Vincent took a room at the hotel-restaurant Carrel, and later, one at Café de la Gare. In early September, he moved into the Yellow House, which he had begun using as a studio on 1 May. .
