È probabile che non esista una cosa chiamata tempo, ma continuiamo pure tranquillamente a mettere al polso i nostri orologi.

Giugliano (NA), Italy, 2015. “Area Vasta” is one of the most polluted areas in Europe with almost 550 acres occupied by dumps. The land hosts a Roma camp, known by the authorities, built inside an illegal dump where, investigations believe, uncountable toxic waste is buried. When in 2014 a special Government Unit for Human Rights visited the site, it stated that the area was the most dangerous human settlement in the Country with a severe health risk. It was, as a matter of fact, incompatible with life. With an alleged cost of 500.000,00 € , Area Vasta was supposed to be just a temporary solution for the 450 people there but, as for today, still 300 of the original inhabitants of the camp remain. @giacomoacunzo photographed their reality during the winter months of 2015. Thinking about the experience he remembers: ”In the cold winter air, all you can see, even before the flock of barefoot, barely clothed kids, before the power line making its way through puddles and the battered shacks, before all that is the smell that gets to you. A pungent stench, almost chemical, lingering in your nose for hours. A smell that, maybe because of a psychological suggestion, stays on your skin for days and days after.”
