For the first time in 94 years, Beijing’s Palace museum, commonly known as the Forbidden City, opened its doors to the public after dark -- and with spectacular results. Completed in 1420, the Forbidden City was the home of emperors and served as the political center of China for over 500 years. This special event forms part of Beijing’s Lantern Festival celebration, which marks the end of the Lunar New Year holiday. The landmark usually closes to tourists in the afternoon but on Tuesday night, about 3,000 lucky visitors got to enjoy it at night. (📸: @xyz2008)

Did you see it? The biggest and brightest supermoon 🌕 of 2019. Photos captured the super snow moon shining brightly across Europe — with one particular image from Germany capturing a plane darting across the celestial body. Native Americans and Europeans gave February the “snow moon” title because it was the month associated with heavy snowfall. It has also been called the bone or hunger moon due to the lack of food available in winter. This is the second of three supermoon events in the first three months of the year -- a packed lunar calendar for 2019. The ‘firefall’ has returned to Yosemite National Park in California — but only for a few days. It’s a natural phenomenon that makes it appear that lava is flowing over a cliff, caused when the light of the setting sun hits the Horsetail Fall waterfall at just the right angle. How it looks varies from year to year, and relies on how much water is flowing. You can only see ‘firefall’ for a short time in February, and it draws hundreds of visitors each night. 📸: @magicphoto78/Instagram

President Trump is one step closer to creating a Space Force 🚀 The President signed a new policy directive Tuesday laying out his administration’s long-awaited plans to create a new branch of the US military that would oversee space warfare. Now, the administration will ask Congress for the necessary authority and funds for the initiative. However, given that the Democrats control the House, congressional support for the Space Force is not guaranteed. (📸: NASA)

The Vatican has acknowledged for the first time that it has guidelines for priests who father children despite their vows of celibacy. “I can confirm that the guidelines exist, it is a document for internal use,” a Vatican spokesman said. He added that the rules were for the “protection of the child.” A growing tide of sexual abuse scandals involving priests around the world has shown that celibacy vows are often broken, but the Catholic Church has long refused to budge from the tradition of requiring celibacy for priests. Sound up 🔊 “We’re not gonna take it. No, we ain’t gonna take it.” A crowd of teachers belted out a rendition of Twisted Sister’s 1980s hit in the West Virginia state capitol on Tuesday as part of a planned strike, a year after educators shut down schools across the state demanding higher pay and better benefits. This time, teachers are protesting over a controversial education reform bill that includes a proposal for education savings accounts — funds that parents could tap into for homeschooling or private school tuition — and the introduction of charter schools across the state.

Karl Lagerfeld, the fashion visionary and creative director of #Chanel, has died. Lagerfeld, who transformed Chanel after taking the helm in 1983, was rarely seen without his dark glasses, a silver ponytail and fingerless gloves -- gaining him the reputation as the most recognizable man in fashion. He was also the creative director at Fendi and his eponymous label. (📷 Patrick Kovarik, Pascal Le Segretain, Jewel Samad, Bertrand Guay, Francois Guillot, AFP/Getty Images) via @cnnstyle

When Kindergarten teacher Shannon Grimm noticed that a girl in her class was being teased for her short hair, Grimm decided to show some solidarity. Grimm chopped her waist-length brown hair into a pixie cut to match her student Priscilla’s. At a school board meeting last week, 5-year-old Priscilla presented Grimm with a medal for being her hero. Grimm also nominated Priscilla for a “Student of the Month” award for being brave. The two are pictured above with their school’s superintendent. (📸:Facebook/Willis Independent School District)

George Mendonsa, identified as the sailor in the famous Times Square photo dubbed “The Kiss,” has died at age 95. The photo, first published in Life magazine, was taken on August 14, 1945, shortly after news of Japan’s surrender in World War II spread through New York’s streets. Mendosa said he was at a matinee when a crowd began pound on the theater doors, shouting, “The war is over!” He left the show to find thousands of revelers in the streets celebrating. The woman in the picture, a dental assistant named Greta Friedman, died in 2016. The photo has sparked countless homages as well as admonitions from those who say it represents an unwanted sexual advance. The day after Valentine’s Day, Terra Pinkard received a text message from the love of her life, Josh Pinkard: "I love you, I've been shot at work," it read. “It took me several times reading it for it to hit me that it was for real,” Pinkard wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday. Josh Pinkard was one of the five people killed when a gunman opened fire at the Henry Pratt Co. plant in Aurora, Illinois, on Friday afternoon. “I called his phone several times, text, FaceTime, nothing...I'm crying now as I write this. I want to shout from the rooftops about how amazing Josh was!" Terra Pinkard wrote. "The man who was dying and found the clarity of mind for just a second to send me one last text to let me know he would always love me." (📸: Facebook)
