There are only about 1400 Hawaiian monk seals left in the world. The vast majority live in remote, uninhabited northwestern Hawaiian Islands.
About 300 animals venture to the main islands. I was lucky enough to spot this cutie taking a nap on the eastern coast of Kauai. Via @escapethezoo

Otter aerobics. πŸ’ͺ

Sea otters are some of the ocean's most charismatic animals. They have extremely thick fur, the thickest of all animals, which keeps them waterproof and protected from the chilly waters they reside in. Want to learn more about these lovable marine mammals? . .

This curious seal wanted a closer look during one of @poseidonexpeditions South Georgia landings. #poseidonexpeditions always follows the rules when it comes to viewing wildlife, but the wildlife sometimes plays by its own set of rules! #travelgoals #southgeorgia #seal

What a beautiful encounter! πŸ‹
Video by @markgirardeau
This overly friendly fin whale gave passengers and myself an exciting encounter as it circled our boat for almost an hour even as we drifted with the engine shut off. This whale is twice the size of the boat and is not even full grown!

FUN FACTS:
The fin whale is one of the largest animals in the world; second only to the blue whale

A single large adult fin whale (at 75 tons) can weigh as much as 10 large elephants (at 15,000 lbs. each). They are among some of the fastest whales too, with a top speed of about 25 miles per hour.

The Asian sheepshead wrasse, Semicossyphus reticulatus, is a species of wrasse, one of the largest, native to the western Pacific Ocean, where it is only known from Korean Peninsula, China, Japan, and the Ogasawara Islands, where it inhabits rocky reef areas.

Peacock Mantis Shrimp 🌈 Ever seen one?
Diving at @atlantisdiveresorts
Video by @fathomless πŸ‘ˆπŸΌme!

The MOST amazing EYE! πŸ‘
We see what we see because our eyes have three photoreceptors, red, green and blue. Our vision is good compared to dogs which have only two photoreceptors (green and blue), but is nothing compared to many birds who have four photoreceptors: ultraviolet (UV) as well as red, green and blue.

Mantis shrimp vision puts everything else to shame. These marine crustaceans may be well-known for their record breaking punch (the same acceleration as a .22 calibre bullet), but they also hold the world record for the most complex visual system.

They have up to 16 photoreceptors and can see UV, visible and polarised light. In fact, they are the only animals known to detect circularly polarised light, which is when the wave component of light rotates in a circular motion. They also can perceive depth with one eye and move each eye independently. It’s impossible to imagine what mantis shrimp see, but incredible to think about.

How many baby turtles can you count? πŸ’š
Via @heron_island_research_station
The wait is over! Hatchlings are finally emerging after their 45-70 day incubation period. These little guys have a tough start to life. It takes them ~3-7 days to break free from their egg and make their way up to the surface. They then have to scramble across the sand, dodging predators such as seagulls and crabs before entering the big blue. Once in the water, they will swim for the next 24 to 48 hours to get out in the deep water to escape marine predators! πŸ“Έ: Abbie Taylor
