PROKOFIEV X 4: Oli Mustonen a remarkable Finish pianist and composer, Italy's Dino Ciani who died at a car crash at 32, Sergei Babayan an Armenian pianist formed in Russia and Sviatoslav Richter a Russian beast. Four different approaches in terms of speed and type of execution. Mustonen and his eccentric playing with his "detached" touch was never fully accepted. Dino Ciani was a sublime player with a fabulous technique., his early departure left the musical world with a few recordings. Armenian-born Sergei Babayan was formed at the Russian Schoof music and is at the same time a concert pianist and a highly praised teacher. Among his pupils he formed a super -star: Daniil Trifonov. Sviatoslav Richter: an appalling master with such insane perfection who's legacy of recordings remain at the highest standards. A brief comparison of their playing, awaiting a comment from you. A snippet of Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in G Major, Op.55 (Mov 5 vivo/finale) Enjoy !

MARTHA ARGERICH and NELSON FREIRE: Two friends working before a concert., having a pleasant moment. Their expression proves command while being relaxed. The fact of being able to share a common activity together may be challenging. In both you see easiness which exceeds conceivable imagination.

EVGENY KISSIN: time is defined as the period between two successive events. A performer is measured according to his work over such period. In Kissin I personally find a freshness from his early years which has conveyed to a denser yet fantastic command as an adult. His flawless sonority is kept over time however the contrast in this excerpt leaves an open question about choices. A snippet of Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor Op. 11 (Mov 1) Enjoy ! DENIS MATSUEV: I really believe this Russian pianist (43) loves music very much., far more than what critics tend to say about him. Usually his bold playing is linked to Shostakovich, Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky. Having the good fortune to listen his performance at Carnegie Hall (broadcasted through Medici) I firmly believe he attentively understands the Classical repertoire by far. Matsuev is a pianist that goes beyond the sparkling climaxes or tiny miniatures always affixed to bises. In this recital he performed Beethoven’s Sonata No. 3 in C major Op.2 No.3, Prokofieff’s Seventh Sonata in B-Flat Major Op.83, among others. DANIIL TRIFONOV: a very difficult work to play by the piano… and the Trumpet. This concerto., with a heavy-working Trifonov makes us view about the complexities from rythm and not only from the usual cascades of arpeggios neither by thirds or the technical burdensome passages. On the classical repertoire, the Shostakovich No.1 (sort of Double Concerto) gives equal space and prominence to the Trumpet and piano. It was initially planned by the composer as a concerto for Trumpet and Orchestra. The four-movement concerto gets a fantastic response from Russian Trumpetist Timur Martinov. A Snippet of Shostakovich Concerto in C Minor for Piano, Trumpet and String Orchestra Op.35 (finale) Enjoy ! (and if you may., please comment)

YUJA WANG: a different approach from the standards I've heard in the past. A profound yet different way art is being transmited through concerts and recordings. For the same reason by posting this I'm curious about your experience and feedback. Recorded by Medicitv., a snippet of Brahms Piano Concerto No. 2 in B Flat Op. 83 (Finale) Enjoy !

BENNO MOISEIWITSCH: Ukranian-born and latter British citizen., was a pupil of Theodor Leschetitzky. Moiseiwitsch had a style modeled on Sergei Rachmaninoff. His energy and exuberance is clearly observed in the Romantic Repertoire., mainly in Russian composers. According to Rachmaninov., his playing of Rachmaninov’s No. 2 was better played than by Rachmaninov himself.
Unfortunately this immense pianist never got the recognition he deserved. Be it for other colossal musicians (Schnabel, Paderewski, etc) who paled his career., its totally worth it to hear his few recordings. A snippet of Schumann’s Fantasiestūcke Op.12 Enjoy ! (and please comment…if you may)

NELSON FREIRE: born in Boa Esperanza, Brazil in 1944 he played with all major orchestras and conductors in most concert halls and recorded a vast amount of repertory for numerous labels. At 15 he initiated a never-ending world tour of South America, Europe and the Far East. Chopin, Liszt , Rachmaninov, Bartok and Ravel are among his most praised recordings. His joint and close relation with Martha Argerich are a non-plus ultra of the piano versions of Rachmaninoff’s Suites and Lutoslawski’s Paganini Variations. He masterfully played chamber music with artists such as Mischa Maisky and Gidon Kremer among others. His easiness and total abandonment through the music can be corroborated in his Rachmaninoff’s Concerto No. 3.
Freire plays by definition as the French term “Jouer” in which creativity, inspiration, effervescence, yet always under control is a pleasure to every listener. Presented by Medicitv., A snippet of Chopin’s Scherzo No.2 Op. 31 in B-flat minor. Enjoy ! (and please comment…if you may)

ALEXEI SULTANOV (1969-2005) The winner of the first prize at the 1989 Van Cliburn Competition had a meteoric rise in the musical scene. With major record labels, contracts and concerts all over the world he was immediately criticized for his personal vision uncommon at the time. Sultanov and his “herculean fortes” and bold playing caught the attention because of his unorthodox playing (few broken strings included) during concerts. Among his critics, György Sandor mentioned his disbelief on his maturity as an artist. In 1995 he received a second prize at the Chopin Competition., which he refused to accept as there was no first prize awarded. Unfortunately Mr Sultanov’s premature death in 2005 came after battling with several strokes which ruined his career and left the world without a performer totally unafraid of taking risks, unlimited interpretation resources exceeding his bravura by far. A Snippet of Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody No.2 in C-Sharp Minor. Enjoy! (And please comment)

EVGENY KISSIN: From Christopher Nupen's film, Allegro films and Medicitv one of the many encores at the Royal Albert Hall in 1997. This recital at BBC proms was the first in more than a hundred years, with a soloist invited to perform. A snippet of Beethoven's "Turkish March" arranged by Anton Rubinstein.

CLAUDIO ARRAU: Chilean-born pianist., he received formal training in Germany from Martin Krause (student of Franz Liszt) Arrau was reading Beethoven’s Sonatas at 4 and a few years later (11) played Liszt’s Trascendental Etudes. He completed the Keyboard works of Mozart, Bach, Schubert, Liszt, Weber among others. A not-easy to describe quality of sound (bold, thickness etc) easily recognizable but hard to define and impossible to be copied. About his tempo most of his middle/late recordings are catalogued as deliberate tempi or slow. I strongly suggest listening to his early renditions., in his Paganini Variations (Brahms) Beethoven Sonatas or Balakirev’s Islamey you may rejoice on his musical and technical skills. DANIEL KHARITONOV: born in (1998) Russia he won the third prize in the XV International Tchaikovsky Competition at 16. His debut at Carnegie Hall was highly praised., many recitals and concertos are a confirmation of his talent.
