Cleo & Coco, Oripeis (7 & 3 y/o), Central Park, New York, NY • “They get along better than the last time you met them. Now they cuddle. Cleo makes baby sounds when they go to bed.”

Maggie, Boston Terrier (2 y/o), 96th & Columbus Ave., New York, NY • “I’m taking her to doggy daycare. I’ve been walking dogs for 34 years. A lot of people don’t stick around that long. It’s a gift that I was given. I took the dogs to the firehouses after 9/11. I lost 31 of my friends that day. A lot of people tell me I’m the only person they trust with their dogs. It’s just my passion.”

Cosmo, Golden Retriever (10 y/o), Stowe, VT • “He’s uncoordinated and is pure love. He pooped inside once in his ten year life. Got on the couch three times total.” A rescue from @yankeegoldens

Jack, Hound mix (3 y/o), Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH • “I grew up with dogs, but he’s my first service dog. There was a lot of pushback for me even getting a dog, but I just went for it. I wouldn’t be in school without him. I have hypersomnia – I’m perpetually tired. I can fall asleep at any time, and if he sees me drifting off he’ll tap to alert me. It’s a unique approach to the disability. There aren’t many treatments for hypersomnia, only narcolepsy. I thought of getting an ESA (Emotional Support Animal) because I also have anxiety and depression, but thought what if I can have a dog help me with my hypersomnia too? He’s really strange; he can’t stand the rain, so rainy days are hard. He’s a priss.”

Kelsie Iris, Heeler/Border Collie/“Purebred Princess” mix (5 y/o), Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH • “She was on the kill list in Louisiana but her foster saw something special in her. She’s now my first service dog. My health got worse in college and I wasn’t as independent anymore. I had seven years of dog training experience, so I developed a training program based off of CCI’s (@ccicanine). She’s a multipurpose medical alert, psychiatric, and mobility service dog with more than 20 different commands. She does a paw for an anxiety alert, like if I start scratching myself – she interrupts self mutilation. She can detect elevated cortisol, increased heart rate, and does a nose bump for hypoglycemia. She does mouthing for an upcoming migraine. She does deep pressure therapy (her whole body weight on top of me) for panic attacks. I also have fibromyalgia, so she’ll lay on my joints like a hot water bottle. She’s changed my world. I joke that she’s the longest relationship I’ve ever been in (three and a half years). She has a lot of service dog badges on her vest because we try to educate the world – there’s still a lot of stigma. Someone once said, ‘You’re not disabled’, and I said, ‘What does disabled look like?’ He didn’t have an answer.” @help.on.four.paws

Smidge, Labrador/Golden Retriever cross (6 y/o), Dartmouth College, Hanover, NH • “She’s my guide dog. I had a tough time adjusting to having a dog at first. I’ve always been really independent and didn’t know if I wanted help. She’s been really helpful navigating campus and doing crowd work – making sure we can both fit through spaces. We’ve run though airports together. I bring her to my national paralympic skiing events. I’ve been skiing since I was four. Her favorite activity is waking up, eating breakfast, and going back to bed.” @guidedogfoundation @staciskier96

Finn, Golden Retriever (6 y/o), Topnotch Resort, Stowe, VT • “He has lymphoma. I'm a nurse and noticed his lymph nodes felt weird. We’re crushed by it – it’s life changing. We made a bucket list to make his final days more amazing. More intentional. He went up in a hot air balloon! One of his to-do’s is to ‘Become a celebrity’.” @finnandyogi

Arlo, “Sato” mix (2 y/o), Topnotch Resort, Stowe, VT • “He’s my psychiatric service dog. I’m a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. He wakes me up from PTSD nightmares and panic attacks. He’s a really empathetic dog. There was a friend’s dog that radically improved my mental health, so I decided to get a dog. He was the ring bearer at our wedding.”

Winston, Labrador Retriever mix (5 y/o) – Available for adoption from White River Animal Rescue (@teefers), VT • “We rescued him earlier this summer, transported him to Vermont, and within a week of arriving he escaped out the door just before his neutering appointment (who can blame him?). He was on the run for 65 days and was finally caught in chicken fencing. He had killed roughly 45 chickens according to local folks. Long story short, Winston is now recovering from his adventure and once treated for heartworm, which can take 3-4 months, he will be available for adoption.”
